Chapter Eight

The last thing Bryn would’ve chosen to do that day was set out on a long journey by horseback. There was no getting around it, though, and he took comfort in the sight of Axel expertly guiding his horse, Sapphire, down the rocky slope ahead of him. Bryn’s stolen nag moved hesitantly and clumsily down the shale. Drummond’s beast snorted in agitation behind him, as did its rider.

The trees were thinner here to the north than they were at the pass where Bryn had been captured. Instead of a dirt road, they followed a goat’s trail across rocky ground. Axel barely appeared to control his horse with the reins at all, instead nudging occasionally with a knee or a squeeze of thighs. Bryn thought of being nudged and squeezed in the same deft manner by those strong legs and soon regretted it, his swollen cock painfully sensitive to the rub of the saddle.

Overall, he really should have been miserable. Thrown to threeve hunters by his family, imprisoned by humans, tortured, and utterly distrusted by the man who moved him like no other person, man or threeve, ever had. If Axel ever did come to trust him, Bryn’s duty was to immediately betray that trust.

And yet being penetrated by Axel had awoken something in Bryn he’d never experienced before. It couldn’t be hope because there was no hope of a future between them. Axel loved an illusion, not Bryn. Begbie’s powerful magic had overridden the constable’s natural hatred of threeves, had even overridden his reluctance to take advantage of a prisoner. Bryn had been the beneficiary.

Never had he felt such pleasure. Never had he felt so desired. He sat up straighter, enjoying the strength of his limbs controlling the fussy horse and the pine-scented breeze on his face. He had no wish to escape from Axel Blackwood but wondered if he should try, if only to reinforce the deception that he had no notion of who he was and no intention of convincing Axel that he was Liam.

Bryn liked the idea of being chased and caught again by Axel. His hands were tied, but if he concentrated, his magic might loosen them. Running might also delay his inevitable act of betrayal against the constable.

His mind drifted to the moment when Axel would come to believe that Bryn was Liam Alloway. Axel already lusted after him, his amazing gray eyes lovingly soaking him in… No, soaking in the illusion. Bryn was just a spell carrier, a body, nothing more.

He would take those moments of being Liam Alloway and make the most of them. It could very well be the last time anyone looked at him with love or held him with such passionate intensity.

“Blast it, Darrow! If you go any slower, Thorburn’s footmen will catch us before long!” Drummond shouted behind him. Bryn didn’t spare the deputy a glance. Liam’s brother hated him. That emotion he’d had enough of. It was Axel’s attention he craved.

Axel stopped where the trail flattened and turned back to them.
